Mecano: "La (Otra) Fuerza del Destino".

Economist, teacher, writer, musician, TSSIer, blogger and nice guy extraordinaire, Peter Cooper reminded me of pop songs from the 1980s.

Well, Pete, here's a 1988 song I always remember, by Spanish band Mecano. Ana Torroja sings "La Fuerza del Destino".

Yes, you guessed it, the pretty and mischievous face belongs to Penélope Cruz.

Ojalá la vida fuera como las canciones; pero a veces no hay final feliz.

  1. Beautiful song. Love it! I remember someone in an interview (possibly one of the Pet Shop Boys) mentioning he often liked songs starting from the chords IV, V, iii, vi, as is the case here (E F# D#m G#m).

  2. Glad you liked it, Pete.

Lyrics and music by the brothers Nacho and José María Cano. An interesting thing: Ana Torroja used to study economics (I'm not sure she finished)

  3. I'm hooked on the video as well as the song. I've watched it over and over now.

As much as we need all the help we can get in the economics battle against capitalism and neoliberalism, I'm glad Ana Torroja was able to focus on music. :)

  4. Sorry I didn't reply before, Pete. I am afraid I go to bed a lot earlier than you. :-)

Well, beyond catchy tunes, the Cano brothers are very good at their job: their songs often have very thoughtful lyrics, too.

Too bad they mostly stuck to Spanish and never tried English lyrics (although they did make a bit of an splash in France and Italy, with their songs translated into French and Italian).
