Welcome to Summer.

The media have been reporting a large fuel spill in Norilsk, Russia. The fuel was intended for power generation by a subsidiary of mining giant Norilsk Nickel operating in the industrial Siberian town. Norilsk is located above the Arctic Circle.

Those reports estimate up to 21K tonnes of fuel were spilt into the soil (6K tonnes) and into a nearby river (15K). Potentially, the fuel reaching watercourses could make its way into the Kara Sea (Arctic Ocean).

Norilsk Nickel representatives claim permafrost thawing caused the fuel reservoir to collapse.

Northern hemisphere summers begin on June 1.
